'Race', however, has remained a factor that prevents Japan, a non-white nation, from identifying itself with the West. The Japanese found an awkward solution for this modern dilemma in apartheid South Africa, where they enjoyed an 'honorary white' status, which granted them some rights and freedoms normally denied to non-white peoples. Twenty years after the official end of apartheid, I have started a research among the Japanese community in post-apartheid South Africa, exploring their racial experiences, relationships and consciousness. In doing so, I do not withhold my moral stance against racism in the hope of establishing a dialectical relationship with the Japanese community.
