Characterized by the diversity of backgrounds and motivations as well as high mobility, new Chinese immigrants have transformed Sihanoukville from a backpacker`s town into a city under development with a focus mainly on casinos. Unlike the localized Cambodian Chinese, new Chinese immigrants have limited contact with the local society in Sihanoukville, forming an ethnic enclave (Muttarak, R. 2017). Simultaneously, there are also newcomers who are in pursuit of a different lifestyle actively seek to integrate into the local community.
