It specifically focuses on the period from 1947 through the 1950s.Presentation of the Declaration started during the American occupation of Japan. Although the situation surrounding Hiroshima changed dramatically when the occupation ended, the ‘event’ took place every year except one year due to the Korean War. It has now become firmly established. During this period, the city was led by two mayors, Shinzo Hamai and Tadao Watanabe. While there are acknowledged differences in the Peace Declarations by these two, there are also underlying commonalities, rooted in a form of humanism and the ideal of ‘great unity’ that transcends political ideologies.
